Casha’s Abstract Sculpture Idea

Way back in December 2010, the Ministry for Gozo had launched a call for proposals to all local artists, intended to increase public art in Gozo, as part of the eco-Gozo action plan. This call for creativity, entitled Public Art in the Streets of Gozo, attracted over 64 Gozitan, Maltese and foreign artists residing in the Maltese islands, presenting a total of 120 maquettes as ideas for modern abstract sculptures to be produced on a large scale and placed in various public places in Gozo, in an effort to support Maltese talent and creativity and also to promote Gozo as a more attractive destination.

Joseph Casha immediately accepted this challenge and presented 3 maquettes, which were infact displayed with the others miniature sculptures at the Ministry`s Exhibition Hall which is open for public viewing until 1st May 2011.

Following the reactions of the general public, the adjudication board which consisted of a team of experts chose the most interesting maquettes, and successfully, Casha`s Abstract Sculpture was one of the few works of art short-listed for the project. The artist was thrilled at the news, “as a sculptor in Malta it has always been my priority to promote the idea of having modern sculptures to adorn our environment, rather than the traditional monuments and busts of public figures we are used to seeing in local squares. And this is the perfect occasion to make my dream come true, which is finally happening.”

This means that in the near future, Casha`s Abstract will become a modern art sculpture installed at one of Gozo`s public areas, to be enjoyed by the general public.
